TheMightyAnchor_FullA stoic force to be reckoned with. The steady rock on which England is destined to lean. Everyone鈥檚 reliable mate, at the ready to defend when called upon. To the world, Vance Morley is the next great keeper for the Rogue Football Club, biding his time at the academy. The definition of tall, dark and handsome, his quiet confidence

and mysterious persona only draw the public in. He鈥檚 their mighty anchor, both on and off the pitch. But when it comes to the one woman he claims to love, he conveniently vanishes at the exact moment I need him. The first time I saw Vance, he was a ten-year-old standing on his lawn across the street. The first time he kissed me, we were sixteen and sitting on the very shores we grew up on. We crashed into each other like waves in a storm, fated to destroy everything in our paths. Including each other. The first time Vance saw our son, by serendipitous accident, my little boy had already lived the first year of his life. And instantly, the man who chose football over me wants to have it all. There is no way I can trust his declarations of love and fatherhood, especially when I鈥檓 set to marry another man. We鈥檙e a new game, one to occupy him until the world stage beckons. But the more I try to tell myself he鈥檚 not the one, the more Vance鈥檚 efforts to win us back increase. How can I guard my heart against seeing my son with his father? Can Vance really sacrifice his dreams in the name of love and family? Is there a way that everyone else鈥檚 safe harbor can finally become mine too?

Our gazes locked. He looked down at me with a molten golden stare and I got the distinct impression that he was thinking about the same things.

鈥淲e can鈥檛,鈥 I started.

鈥淣o,鈥 he agreed quickly.

Too quickly. I felt the familiar resistance, the old wound of his rejection, that he found me ridiculous and repulsive, but I remembered. His fingers, his touch, the way he greedily tasted me.

My inner princess was now offended. 鈥淲hy can鈥檛 we?鈥 I demanded. 鈥淎 lot of men think I鈥檓 attractive. A lot of women, too,鈥 I added, for good measure.

A tense sigh tore of out of him. 鈥淚 know.鈥

鈥淵ou know that I鈥檓 attractive, or you know that a lot of other people think I鈥檓 hot enough to 鈥︹ My voice tapered out under the undeniable heat of his gaze. 鈥淜iss,鈥 I ended lamely.

鈥淵ou don鈥檛 want to be with someone like me,鈥 Hugh said, almost kindly.

鈥淪omeone like you?鈥 There was my alter ego, Awkward Repeating Robot, again. 鈥淎re you gay?鈥 I asked him.

His mouth slid to one side. 鈥淣o.鈥

I wracked my brain for other possible reasons why I would not want to be with this tall, handsome, extremely competent man with intense eyes and clever hands and a loyal heart and 鈥 oh. Crap.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e married.鈥

鈥淥therwise attached?鈥

Another frustrated sigh. 鈥淣o. I鈥檓 a fucking street kid from Koras who joined the army simply to get food and a roof over my head. I鈥檓 a government employee with

cheap suits, tattoos, a government pension that starts in two months and absolutely no knowledge about expensive wine or the Crusades or the fucking king who got himself killed in that supermarket car park.鈥 Suddenly, Hugh was much closer, practically looming over me.

鈥淲ait. You think you鈥檙e not good enough for me?鈥 I laughed. Oh, irony was delicious. 鈥淵ou know I鈥檓 not a princess anymore, right?鈥

鈥淪o you keep saying. But all I see is the daughter of the next king of Drieden.鈥

I held his gaze for a long moment. 鈥淟iar,鈥 I finally said.

鈥淲hat did you call me?鈥

鈥淵ou heard me. I called you a liar. If all you saw was an untouchable princess, then you wouldn鈥檛 have done what you did.鈥

鈥淚t was a mistake.鈥

鈥淣ot on the couch,鈥 I said. 鈥淚n the stables. When I was nineteen and asked you to take my virginity. You know what I think?鈥

鈥淚 couldn鈥檛 possibly guess.鈥

鈥淚 think you were tempted to take me up on the offer.鈥

鈥淵ou were a child.鈥

鈥淚 was nineteen. You were鈥攚hat, twenty-five?鈥 I shook my head. It wasn鈥檛 an unheard-of, insurmountable age difference. 鈥淵ou saw me as something else.鈥

鈥淵ou鈥檙e right.鈥

He leaned in, inches away from my face. 鈥淚 saw you as trouble.鈥

It all clicked then. Hugh鈥檚 fundamental nature, how he took his job so seriously. He鈥檇 said it in Italy, hadn鈥檛 he? He thought his job was to protect me from my own bad decisions.

Even if my bad decision was him.
