New Release! Keeping The Throne by Nicole James ☠️

Title: Keeping the Throne
Series: Royal Bastards MC: Durango, CO #3
Author: Nicole James
Genre: MC Romance
Release Date: August 30, 2022
BLURB

I’m the president of the RBMC’s Durango Chapter.

My brothers call me Rock.
I’ve spent my life devoted to this MC.
I’ve built this chapter from the ground up and I’m not about to watch everything I worked so hard to build go down in flames, but keeping this throne may cost me everything I hold dear.
I lost the love of my life years ago, and since then no woman has come close to filling the emptiness that hole has left in my heart. I’ve pretty much given up on there ever being a second chance at a love like that again for me. I’ve accepted that it just isn’t in the cards.
Until I meet one very right woman in one very wrong place at one very wrong time.
I never saw this coming. Not in a million years.

TRICK–

I’m the VP of the Evil Dead MC’s Las Vegas Chapter.
When I’m asked to do a favor for an employee and pick up her eighteen-year-old kid sister from high school, I don’t realize I’ll soon be up to my neck in trouble. Come to find out, she’s the lone witness to a murder by the Santorini crime family.
Now the mob wants her dead, and I’ve got to decide if I risk stepping up to help her.
This isn’t the MC’s business and getting involved could put a target on all our backs. The only problem is I’m her only hope.
The more time I spend with this chick, the more I’m starting to fall for her. And the more miles on the road we spend together, the more this shy girl with her OCD tendencies is turning into a take-no-prisoners badass.
Now I’m determined to save her in spite of the fact that the mob is doing everything it can to stop me.
If I have any chance of saving us both, I’ll have to outsmart them every step of the way.

On leave one night thirteen years ago, I slept with my battle brother’s little sister. Layla was wild, uninhibited, and everything I could ever want, but nothing I could have.

EXCERPT

Jake–

My phone chimes, and I glance at it.

Rebecca: I’ve been thinking about you.

I shove my phone in my pocket and slap my palm on the bar, standing. “I’m gonna take off now. Nice seeing you, Angel.”
“Hey.” Cole grabs my arm and pulls me in, dipping his head to my ear. “Need you to find out how much Hot Wax knows about our friends.”
I straighten and meet his eyes. Goddamn it. I nod. “Sure, Prez.” He lets go of my arm, and I stalk outside. Fucking hell. Last thing I want to do is see Rebecca again. I light a cigarette, pull out my phone, and text her.

Me: Where r u
Rebecca: On patrol
Me: Got time to meet
Rebecca: I always have time for you, handsome
Me: Meet me at the convenience store on the corner of Capitol and Berryessa, 10 minutes
Rebecca: See you then

I take one last drag off my smoke, flick the butt across the parking lot, shove my phone in my pocket, and climb on my bike.
Ten minutes later, I roll into the parking lot of the quick mart. Rebecca’s not here yet, so I take a spot away from the building and wait. Five minutes later I spot her squad car coming up Capitol. She swings in and backs into the spot next to me. I’m sitting sideways on my seat, smoking a cigarette as she powers down her window.
“You’re late.” I squint through the smoke I exhale toward the twilight sky.
She grins. “I was across town, sweetheart. How are you? You look damn fine sitting there.”
I ignore her question and comment and look across the parking lot. “Heard you made a big bust the other day.” She stays quiet, so I meet her eyes.
“Did you, now?” Her voice is a whisper.
“Satan’s Slayers.”
She opens her door, but I shut that down quickly, glancing around. “Stay in your car.”
Her eyes scan the lot. “Why?”
“Because I said so. What made you stop those two the other day?”
Her brows lift. “It helped you, didn’t it?”
“That why you did it?”
She looks away. “Is this the only reason you wanted to meet? Just to ask me about that arrest?”
“How’d you know about them, Rebecca?”
“I…” She shrugs. “I hear things.”
That has my chin pulling to the side, and I’m suddenly wondering if she’s planted a bug somewhere on my bike. “What’d you hear?”
“A little birdy told me they firebombed your club’s business.”
I stand up and lean my palms on her open window. “What fucking birdy, Rebecca?”
“Don’t get so upset, Jake. It was a friend in the fire department. Why do you care?”
“I’m in the business of caring about club information getting out. If you’re smart, you’ll stay out of our business, Rebecca.”
“It helped you out, didn’t it? You think I want them to hurt you?”
“I can take care of myself. I don’t need you getting in the middle of whatever happens with that bunch, understand?”
“You do care about me.” Her face lights up at my words.
I shake my head. “No. I don’t. I wish to God I’d never met you.”
Her chin lifts, and her eyes narrow. “You’re just saying that, just playing the tough guy. I get it.”
“I’m not playing anything. That’s what you don’t get.”
She puts her car in gear. “You want to know how I found out about the Slayers, then meet me at our spot tonight.” She hits the gas and pulls away, and I back away from the squad car as she peels out.
“It’s not our fucking spot,” I yell after her like a fucking idiot. I drag a hand through my hair, knowing I’m going to have to meet her to get that information. “Goddamn it.”

EXCERPT

Finally, I drop my heavy weight to her again, and she clutches me tightly, accepting it gladly. Our sweat-slick skin presses together, the burning heat of our bodies sending warmth down to my soul.

I’m so wrung out I don’t want to move, but I know she can’t take my weight forever, so I pull out and roll to my back. When my breathing recovers, she turns on her side away from me.
I go up on an elbow. “Hey.” I dip my face in her neck and wrap my arms around her. “You okay?”
She nods, but doesn’t answer verbally.
I rub her upper arm, and bury my nose in her hair. “You smell like honeysuckle.”
“It’s my shampoo.” Her voice is barely a whisper.
“It reminds me of home.”
“Where’s home?”
“Mississippi.” I lift up and run my hand over her bare hip. Her skin is golden in the firelight. It’s then I see the spot of blood on the white sheet, and go still.
“Jesus Christ. Layla.” My voice is a whisper.
She tenses.
“Baby. You were a virgin? Why didn’t you tell me?”
“It doesn’t matter. It’s done now.”
I’m thrown by her words. It’s almost like it was a chore to be done. Lose your virginity. Check.
“I don’t understand.”
Her shoulder lifts in a small shrug. “There’s nothing to understand.”
“You could have told me to stop. Why didn’t you?”
“I didn’t want you to stop.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted you.”
“But you hardly know me. That isn’t something you do.” I pause, studying her, but she still has her back to me. “How old are you?”
“Does it matter?”
“Yeah. All of a sudden it sure does. Please, God, tell me you’re of age.”
“I’m eighteen.”
I breathe an internal sigh of relief. But more questions follow. “How does an eighteen year old girl end up the live-in housekeeper on a ranch?”
“I’m not exactly the housekeeper.”
My mind is spinning. “Then who exactly are you?”
“Layla Draper. Chris is my brother.”
I practically fly off the bed to stand naked next to it spearing both hands through my hair. “Holy fuck. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck!”
She rolls and tucks the sheet across her breasts. “Yes, that’s what we did.”
I stare at her in horror. Oh my God. Chris is going to kill me with his bare hands. “Do you know what position you just put me in?”
“I just gave you my virginity. You seemed to enjoy yourself. You should be pretty happy right now.”
“Happy? Have you lost your goddamn mind? I’m a dead man walking.”
She rolls her eyes. “Don’t be so dramatic. He doesn’t even know. And he won’t hear it from me, that’s for sure.”
“What fucking game are you playing?”
“Look, you want the truth?”
“Uh, yeah!”
“I’ve been a good girl all through high school. Always home in my virginal bed by nine. Never let a boy get past second base. Always followed the rules.”
“And you picked tonight to break every one of them?” I pace across the room and back, then catch her trailing her eyes over my naked body, and freeze. “Hey. Eyes up here, missy.”
She giggles.
I go to grab the blanket, but she grabs my wrist and pulls me down.
“Get back in bed. The damage is done, and I don’t have cooties.”
I lay next to her, punching the pillow for good measure to let her know I’m still pissed. That only gets me another chuckle from her, this time with full body shake.
“What was this all about, Layla?”
“Like I was saying, I’ve always played by the rules. But I’m going off to college next month and I didn’t want to go a virgin.”
“So, it was just something to get out of the way?”
“Something like that.”
“That’s a fucked up way of looking at it. It’s supposed to be special, with some guy you love.”
“My prince, you mean? He was taking too long to find me.”
“You are the strangest woman I’ve ever met.” That gets me a smile.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“You called me a woman, and now, finally, I feel like one.” She turns her head on the pillow to look at me. “Have you ever been with a virgin?”
“Nope. You’re a first for me.”
She grins. “So I’ll be memorable that way.”
“That’s a fact. ‘Til the day I die I’ll remember this night.”
“Good. Then we both will.”
I stare at the fire for a while, and finally give up trying to make sense of this whole night. “So, college, huh?”
“Yes. I can’t wait.”
“What are you going to study?”
“Pre-law. I want to go to law school one day.”
“A lawyer, huh?”
“Yep,” she says proudly. “I’m going to get justice for people, the ones that never get it. The ones the system lets down. Those are the people I want to help.”
I chuckle. “I think those are the lawyers that never make any money, darlin’.”
“I don’t care. That’s not what’s important.”
“You say that now. Wait until you have bills to pay.”
“Whatever.”
“So is there a prince in this future plan of yours somewhere?”
“I don’t need a man. I refuse to be one of those women.”
“Those women?”
“I’m not going to be home cooking dinner and waiting for a man to come in and take me for granted while he eats his meatloaf without talking to me.”
I can’t hold back the chuckle. “Layla, I just met you and even I know that no man will ever be able to take you for granted.”
She clasps her hands behind her head and smiles at the ceiling. “Good.”
“What other dreams have you got, besides bein’ a kickass lawyer and all?”
“Get the hell out of Texas. I’m sick of flat nothing for as far as the eye can see. I want to live near the ocean and maybe mountains.”
“I can understand that. What else?”
“I’d love to start a charity someday.”
That gets my attention, because it’s about the last thing I expect her to say. I swivel my head to look at her. “A charity? What kind?”
“I haven’t figured that out yet. But it’ll come to me eventually.”
I grin. “I’m sure it will. Come here.” I pull her against me, and tuck her to my side. My calloused palm strokes down her bare arm, loving the touch of her soft skin under mine. She wraps a hand across my chest and snuggles closer. I kiss the top of her head. “You’re somethin’ special, Layla. Don’t ever let anyone tell you different.”
That gets me a squeeze.
“Get some sleep, babe. I’m beat.”
I stay awake long after her breathing evens out and I know she’s drifted off. I stare at the ceiling, thinking about how badly I’ve fucked up and how in the hell I’m going to get out of this mess.
I eventually dose off. Like always, I’m back in Afghanistan, walking some road when a bomb goes off in front of me, taking out a Humvee and everyone near it. I’ve had the same dream over and over. But this time I’m startled awake by the distant sound of a jet high overhead. I jerk, and I’m breathing hard, my heart racing. It takes me a minute to remember where I am and why there’s a warm woman pressed against my side.
Then it all comes flooding back. Layla. She’s Chris’s barely legal little sister. Fuck. Fuck. Fuck. I twist my wrist and look at the time. 5:45 a.m.
The only thing I know to do is get the fuck out of here and back to the guest room where I’m supposed to be sleeping.
The fight or flight reaction takes over, and this time flight wins the day. I’ve got to get the fuck out of here as soon as possible. I manage to slip from the bed without waking Layla and pull on my clothes and boots.
I stand next to the bed, straightening my cuffs as I stare down at the beautiful girl. Last night I fucked up, royally, but somehow I know I’ll never regret being with her. She’s the soothing balm my weary soul needed. My eyes connect with the glint of metal on the table next to the bed. The key ring she’d pulled from her pocket. I don’t know what makes me take them and slip off the small round silver medallion that catches my eye. I read the scrolling words engraved on it.

Life is beautiful – enjoy the ride.

I certainly had. I slip it in my pocket as a keepsake, and then I pause and take off my dog tags. I can always get replacements, so I leave this set on the side table. It’s all I have to leave her to remember me by, and our night together. I take another last look at her then sneak out like a fucking coward. I have a lot to fear. I just fucked the eighteen-year-old sister of my Navy SEAL host and friend. And that, I’m sure, will not go over well.

Can a face from my past change my future?

When an invitation shows up out of the blue, I’m reminded of a promise I made to a girl twenty years ago and suddenly my heart is pounding.

Do I dare keep it?

She’s the one girl that ever meant a damn to me, and the one girl that got away. She walked out of my life once and it devastated me. Now life is giving me another shot, but if she walks out on me a second time I don’t think I’ll survive it.

EXCERPT

The sound of a pack of Harleys coming up the street draws my attention and I wander to the front of the house to peer out the window. It’s four of my brothers. They slow to make the turn into my driveway.
I backtrack through the house and go out the back door to meet them. They park and dismount, pulling their helmets off.
“Wondered how long it’d take before you found the place.” I smile. “I hope to God you brought beer.”
Red Dog grins, pulls a twelve-pack out of his saddlebag, and holds it up. “Like American Express . . . don’t leave home without it.”
I fold my arms. “Okay, you’re allowed in. What about the rest of you? Do you come bearing gifts?”
Wolf pulls a bottle of Jack out of his saddlebag. “Does this get me inside?”
“You also may enter.”
I look at Cole and Crash and arc a brow. “Well?”
Cole scoffs. “You’re lucky we hauled our asses over the mountains to come see the place.” They both shoulder past me.
Crash slugs me in the chest as he tromps up the steps. “Let’s see this Tyrolean Haunted House you’re livin’ in, Green.”
Boots trudge inside, and four leather-clad men plus myself take up most of the space in the kitchen.
Red Dog hands me the case of cans. “Don’t say I never gave ya nothin’.”
I tear it open and pass them each a beer.
They wander around the house, checking each room.
“Christ, Green, what are you going to do with a place this big?” Cole asks.
“I know who’s having the next Christmas party,” Wolf says. “Bet you could fit a ten-foot tree in this entryway.” He stares up.
“Look at that staircase, man. How old is this place?” Red Dog asks.
“1889,” I reply.
Red Dog looks up the stairs. “How many rooms you got in this place?”
“Fifteen.”
“Some rich guy build it?”
“Railroad baron or so I’ve been told.” I shrug. “Never really researched it.”
Crash looks over at me, resting his elbow on the banister post. “Seriously, Green, how are you gonna pay to heat and cool a place this big, not to mention the upkeep and repairs?”
“Gram left me some insurance money. If it gets to be too much, guess I’ll sell it.”
We move to the dining room and sit around the big table.
Cole slouches back in the chair at the head of the table, one arm hooked over the back. I sit on the opposite end. Wolf and Crash sit in the middle, while Red Dog leans a hip against the buffet.
“You movin’ in probably lowered the home values of everybody in the neighborhood,” Crash jokes.
“Drive over wasn’t as far as I thought,” Cole says.
“Nope, just twenty minutes from the clubhouse.”
“How you likin’ it so far?” Cole asks.
“Better than where I was,” I reply, and wait for the jokes. My brothers don’t fail me.
“Anything’s better than that trailer, Green.” Crash grins at me.
I can’t argue with him, so I don’t bother.
Wolf leans his elbows on the table. “So you gonna hire a maid to keep the place clean?”
I know he’s only half-joking. “Yeah. Gonna make her dress in one of those little skimpy French maid outfits.”
Red Dog chuckles. “Good luck with that. Maybe you can get one of the strippers from the club to come and play house with you, Green.”
Wolf swivels to him. “Haven’t you heard, bro? Our boy here has sworn off strippers.”
“Nah, can’t be true. Say it ain’t so, Green.” Red Dog laughs and props a hand on the buffet. It lands on the invitation. He glances down, frowns, then picks it up and reads it. “What’s this? You’re cordially invited to the class of 2001 twenty-year reunion. Damn, Green, you’re gettin’ old.”
I nod and take a hit off my beer.
“Wait, you graduated high school? And you’re still that dumb?” Wolf teases.
“He probably paid someone to take the test.” Crash grins at me.
“Or slept with the teacher.” Cole joins in.
“You goin’?” Red Dog asks.
“Yeah.”
“You’re kiddin’ me. Why would you go to something like that?” Wolf asks. “We have better parties at the clubhouse any day of the week.”
“I made a promise to this girl that I would.” That gets all their attention.
“You got a high school sweetheart, Green?” Wolf teases, making kissy faces.
“Grow up,” I snap.
“What kind of promise?” Crash asks.
I explain.
Cole arcs a brow. “So you made a promise to show up at this thing, and if you’re both single, you’ll date this chick whom you haven’t seen in twenty years?”
“I keep my promises, especially to Sara.”
“You mean you suckered some high school girl into this pact? I think we need to rescue her.”
“Ha ha. You guys are hilarious. I said I’d go, and I’m going.”
Red Dog huffs a laugh. “No kidding? You’re really gonna get all dressed up and go to this fancy ball?”
“It’s not a ball,” I argue.
“Says here it’s in the ballroom of the Fife Estate. Sounds like a ball to me,” he says, scanning the invitation. “Dude, did you even read this thing?” He proceeds to read aloud. “We’re recreating the magic of our Fairytale Prom at the ballroom and gardens of the Fife Estate . . . a night of enchantment under the stars . . . Black Tie required. That’s a ball, bro.”
“Fife Estate? Where’s that?” Wolf asks.
“Says here its thirty miles south of San Francisco, nestled on the slope of the Santa Cruz Mountains . . . blah, blah, blah . . . built in 1917 . . .”
“Will you shut up about that,” Wolf grabs it out of Red Dog’s hands and looks at me. “Green, are you serious about this stuff?”
“What stuff?”
“This pact or promise or whatever you made with this girl.”
“Yeah. I’m serious.”
“You realize this is like in two weeks?”
“Yeah, so?”
“You RSVP?”
“Yeah. Couple days ago.”
“What were you plannin’ on wearing?”
Laughter breaks out around the table.
“Dude, do you even own a suit?” Crash asks.
“Crap, hadn’t thought of that.”
More laughter.
“What’s so funny?” I ask.
Wolf grins. “You. You’re like a reverse Cinderella. What you need is a fairy godmother.”
“He needs like a pack of ‘em,” Crash adds, finishing off his beer, and crushing the can in his hand.
“I think this calls for a run to the nearest tux shop,” Wolf says, looking not at me, but at Cole who grins and nods.
“I think you’re right, brother.”
“Oh, no,” I protest, but they’re already standing. Red Dog grabs me by the underarms and hauls me up.
“Oh, yes. Come on.”
Wolf is already pulling up the nearest location on his phone. “Ten minutes from here.”
And so, in no time at all, I find myself standing in front of a mirror in a black tux, with some old man measuring my inseam.
“While you got that tape measure out—” Red Dog starts to joke, staring at my crotch.
“Shut up,” I tell him.
The man ignores him and measures my arm and shoulders. “Very good, sir. We’ll have it ready for pickup on Thursday, next week.”
I slip the jacket off into his waiting arms. “Thanks.”
The guys all move out to the street, while I pay at the counter and get my receipt. I shove it in my pocket and head outside where my brothers wait by the bikes parked at the curb. They’ve given me hell for the last hour, and no doubt won’t be letting up until the big day, but for a chance to see Sara again, I’ll put up with whatever they dish out.
Cole is sitting sideways on the seat of his bike, smoking a cigarette. He grins up at me when I come through the door. “Remember, Cinderella, you turn back into a pumpkin at midnight.”
“Green, what if she’s a dog?” Wolf asks.
“She wasn’t a dog.”
“Been twenty years, dude,” he reminds me, and it gives me pause.
“There’s that deer-in-the-headlight look of panic I’ve been waitin’ for,” Crash says, chuckling.
“Crap,” I whisper the word, wondering if I haven’t thought this through. “I have no idea what I’m getting myself into, do I? What if she’s not my style?”
“Your style? You mean fast and easy?” Crash snipes.
“He means a stripper,” Wolf clarifies, laughing.
“Just look her up on social media,” Cole suggests.
“Do I look like a person who uses social media? Besides her name is very common, and there’s like a thousand people who pop up.”
“Maybe you need to bring a date,” Wolf suggests.
“A date? Green?” Red Dog laughs.
Cole chuckles, meeting my eyes. “I’m sure he could pay one of the girls down at the strip club to go with him.”
“Let’s go. Any excuse to stop by there is a good one in my book,” Wolf says, waggling his brows.
“F that,” I protest.
“Come on, Green. We have to nail this down today. You gotta be fair and give the girl time to come up with a dress for this shindig, don’t you?”
I roll my eyes.
“Mount up, Green,” my VP orders with a grin.
I jam my helmet on my head, and swing my leg over my seat, lifting it off the kickstand. “I hate you all.”
I drowned out their round of laughter with the roar of my Harley.

BLURB

Can a face from my past change my future?

When an invitation shows up out of the blue, I’m reminded of a promise I made to a girl twenty years ago and suddenly my heart is pounding.
Do I dare keep it?
She’s the one girl that ever meant a damn to me, and the one girl that got away. She walked out of my life once and it devastated me. Now life is giving me another shot, but if she walks out on me a second time I don’t think I’ll survive it.
Second chances don’t come around very often. Not for a one-percent biker like me. There are no do-overs in the MC life. Not when you’re staring down the barrel of a gun. Not when you’re deciding whether to pull the trigger.
But love? Maybe for once the luck of the Irish will shine down on me and give me a second chance with the one girl I let slip through my fingers.
Living with regret is a hard pill to swallow.
Living with the same regret twice? Impossible.

Sometimes facing your past can be the scariest thing you’ll ever do.

BLURB

Shane–

I live at the end of this dark, deserted, dead-end street for a reason.
I don’t like neighbors, and I’m not into kids. So I’m pissed to learn the vacant house across the street just got rented.
When a child comes snooping around my house, I’m forced to do the last thing I want to do–meet my new neighbor. When I go to return the kid to her side of the street, I come face-to-face with one pissed off mama bear and the hottest chick I’ve ever laid eyes on–and that’s saying a lot.
Suddenly I’m all about being neighborly; the only problem is she wants nothing to do with me or my MC life.
Can I blame her?
Guess I’ll just have to change her mind.
When problems start piling up at the club, I can’t help wondering if she’s to blame. I’ve never had a woman twist me in knots like this one.
My life is simple and uncomplicated–I live for my club.

I have a feeling she’s going to complicate everything.

Brianna–

When I see the motorcycles pull in across the street, I suddenly realize why this rental house was so cheap and the leasing agent so eager to unload it.
But when you’re running for your life, a dead-end street with few neighbors sounds perfect.
One look at the badass biker next door is all it takes for me to know I want nothing to do with trouble like him.
He’s the worst kind of dangerous–a man built like a Chippendale dancer who radiates confidence and fearlessness. I’m sure there’s not a situation he couldn’t handle or a room he wouldn’t own just by walking through the door.
He’s the kind of man men fear and women want to tame—the kind of man my mother warned me about.
I’ve got secrets, and he wants to know every one of them.
I have a feeling he’s going to complicate everything.

Lola—
I hate keeping secrets from my father, but I know he’ll be furious if he finds out where I’m going. That’s a risk I’m willing to take because I know what I’m doing is right.
I expected my father to send someone to find me. He always does.
But this guy?
I’ve never lain eyes on him before; trust me, I’d remember this man.
He’s damn fine; unfortunately he won’t let me seduce him into keeping my secret.

Memphis—
Trouble in a tank top, that’s what this beauty is.
She thinks she can sweet-talk me into getting involved in her deception.
I may want to get wrapped up in her arms, but getting wrapped up in her scheme is a whole other ball game.
Guess again, sweet cheeks.
I don’t care how fine your strut is; it won’t work on me.
I’m immune where the hot-as-hell Club Princess is involved.
My loyalty belongs to my club first, but I’m a nomad for a reason, and letting Lola get her hooks in me is not in my plan.

EXCERPT

He turns back to me and stills, his eyes sweeping over me in the dim light. I’m suddenly acutely aware of the fact that I’m in his shirt, my bare legs exposed and my braless breasts outlined.
“You look about seventeen.”
“I’m not.”
His gaze lifts to mine as my meaning sinks in.
“That chair has to be uncomfortable.”
“It is,” he admits.
I lift my hand toward him, my invitation clear.
He hesitates. “We do this, it’s only temporary, understand? I’m not looking for anything more.”
“I understand. I’m not either,” I lie. Whether he reads the lie in my eyes or not, he prowls toward me and backs me to the small peninsula that sticks out from the kitchenette. The countertop presses into my back.
His gaze is intent and filled with male hunger. My belly tightens as he braces his hands on the counter on either side of me, bracketing me in. My eyes drop to his chest, and I draw in a ragged breath.
“Look at me, Lola.”
I lift my gaze to his emerald orbs, and I’m lost in them.
“You sure about this?”
My pulse skitters, and I’m mesmerized by his penetrating stare. There are barely a few inches between our bodies, and that space crackles with the physical energy arcing between us.
He hasn’t even touched me, and already my body is humming with need.
He cocks his head, and studies me. “If you’re having second thoughts, better speak up now. Because if you want the truth, once we move to that bed, I’m going to be all over you.”
Holy crap, his words turn me on. A jolt shoots through my body, and I suck in a breath. “I want that.”
Slowly, his head lowers, and I hold perfectly still as he brushes his lips over mine. Our mouths are the only place we’re touching, and its erotic as hell. I can feel my entire body vibrating with awareness of how close we are. Finally, I break the standoff and wrap my arms around his neck.
His hands close around my waist and he lifts me onto the counter, prying my knees apart and stepping between them. His thick arms wrap around me to yank me flush against him, and I gasp, loving the way he’s manhandling me.
“Look at me.”
I shyly stare up, meeting his warm gaze.
“I need to know you understand who I am—what I am. I’m a Nomad, Lola.”
“I get that.”
“You’re gorgeous, you know that, don’t you? I’m sure you’ve got your choice of patches, if that’s what you’re after.”
“I’m not.”
He suddenly grins. “Every warning bell in my head is going off right now, telling me you’re probably more trouble than I need, girl. Probably gonna steal my heart, too, if I let you. But I really want you; warning bells be damned.”
I meet him halfway as his mouth descends on mine. Instantly, need jolts through me, like nothing I’ve ever felt before. My arms steal around him, and I’m just as determined to ignore those same warning bells I hear myself.
His kiss is like no other; his firm, knowing touch, his tall body and broad shoulders, they all work on me like no man I’ve ever known. Everything is different with him. Everything feels right, like this is fate and destined. Things I’ve never believed in.
It’s as if he’s everything I’ve been waiting for all these lonely years.
As he pulls back and stares down at me, his big chest rising and falling faster than before, I know he feels it too. That something is special here, but he doesn’t want to believe in it.
He brushes my hair back from my forehead, staring into my gaze. “I see it in your eyes. Don’t go getting attached, girl. I never stay in one place for long.”
“I won’t.”
“I just want to be up front with you.”
“No expectations. I’ve got it.”
“Doesn’t mean I won’t come back around. Doesn’t mean we won’t see each other again. We will. I guarantee it.”
“No. We made a deal. No guarantees, no promises, no expectations. Just now, just this moment.”
He grins at my reply. “Damn. It’s like you were made for me.”
